What Each Material Actually Is

Soapstone: a talc-rich metamorphic stone
Soapstone (geologically, steatite) forms under high-pressure, low-temperature conditions and is dominated by talc. Commercial countertop slabs run roughly 30–50% talc, with the balance chlorite, magnesite, and amphibole minerals that add hardness. The high talc content is exactly why the surface feels soft and soapy — and why it is naturally dense and non-porous.

New soapstone darkens over time as exposure to water, grease, and oils oxidizes the surface into a deep charcoal. The oil eventually evaporates and is reapplied; the darkening it brought forward stays.
