Buckling is the expansion half — the floor has nowhere to grow, so it lifts. Gapping is the contraction half — the floor shrinks and pulls apart at the short end seams. Diagnosing which one you have decides the entire repair.
Both stem from the same material behavior. Luxury vinyl plank is built around PVC, and PVC moves measurably with temperature. A floating floor is not fastened to the slab; the planks lock edge to edge and ride free, so the whole field expands and contracts as one sheet. Diagnose the Cause Before You Touch a Plank
Before any repair, confirm what is driving the movement. The same open seam can come from a missing expansion gap, a sun-loaded room, a hollow under the planks, or all three at once. Walking the floor methodically tells you which fix actually closes the gaps for good rather than for one season.
Map the gaps to the room
Stand at the gapped seam and look up. Gaps that march toward a window wall, a slider, or a south room are thermal. Gaps near a plumbing leak or an exterior door that floods are moisture-driven and belong in a different repair entirely. The location of the failure is the first and best clue.
Check the perimeter for a pinch point
Pull the quarter round or base shoe at a few walls and look behind it. If the planks touch the wall, a doorjamb, or a cabinet toe-kick with no visible gap, the floor has been pinched and is relieving itself at the weakest seams. A single pinched doorway can open joints two rooms away.
Sound out the substrate

Miss any one of these and the gap is only as good as its tightest point. A floor cut perfectly along three walls will still gap if a single cabinet pins the fourth side.
Why glue-down floors do not gap and floating floors do
A glue-down floor is bonded plank by plank to the slab, so each plank can only move within the flexibility of the adhesive — the field cannot accumulate movement across the room. A floating floor moves as one connected sheet, so all of the day's expansion and contraction has to be absorbed at the perimeter. That structural difference, not product quality, is why a sun-baked floating SPC floor gaps where a glued floor of the same plank does not.

Shade the floor at peak sun
Drapes, blinds, and exterior shading over west and south glass keep direct sun off the planks during the hottest hours. Manufacturers explicitly recommend window coverings during peak sunlight to limit thermal expansion and fading on rigid-core vinyl. The cheapest fix on this list is closing the blinds on a 95°F afternoon.
Downgrade the solar heat through the glass
A low-emissivity (low-E) coating or a solar-control window film lowers the SHGC of a window, cutting the share of solar energy that passes through to heat the slab. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that low-E coatings and films reduce solar heat gain, and the Florida Building Code energy provisions already push new fenestration toward low SHGC for cooling-dominated climates.
Keep the room conditioned
Letting the air conditioning cycle off for days — in a vacation home or a closed-up rental — lets indoor temperature spike and then crash, which is the exact swing that opens seams. Gluing the floor down is a real cure because a bonded floor cannot accumulate movement across the room — but for an existing floating floor it is the last option, not the first. Free the perimeter and cut the solar heat before you commit to full-spread adhesive, because those two fixes solve most Florida gapping without tearing the floor out.
When glue-down is worth it
If a room has a vast wall of west glass that cannot be shaded, a slab that holds heat for hours, and a floor that has gapped through two summers despite a correct perimeter, a glue-down reinstallation may be the durable answer. Many rigid-core products are rated for both floating and glue-down use; confirm the specific plank allows it before committing.
When it is the wrong move
- The perimeter is simply pinched. Freeing one doorway or cabinet often closes the joints — no adhesive needed.
- The slab is not flat or dry. Glue-down demands a flatter, drier slab than floating; bonding over a failing slab trades one problem for a worse one.
- The product is not rated for glue-down. Adhering a float-only plank can void the warranty and still move.
Glue-down belongs at the end of the decision tree, after the perimeter and the sun have been ruled out as the cheaper, faster cause.
Pick your fix by condition
- If the perimeter is pinched at any wall, door, or cabinet — free it to a full 1/4-3/8 in gap and reseat the field first.
- If gaps track a sunny west or south window — add shading and a low-E or solar-control film before anything structural.
- If the substrate sounds hollow — level the slab so the locks re-engage, then reinstall.
- If the room stands unconditioned for days — restore steady cooling to flatten the cycle.
- If it still gaps after all of the above and the plank is rated for it — glue the floor down.

Once the cause is confirmed, closing the joints on a floating floor is an orderly process: relieve the perimeter, tap the field back together from a free edge, reset the trims, and remove the heat that opened the seams. Done in order, the floor goes back tight and stays tight through the next Florida summer.
