Salt Air and the Transitions

On a barrier island the floor field is rarely the failure point — the metal around it is. Onshore air within a few miles of the surf carries chloride that pits ordinary 304 stainless within a few years, so transition strips, edge trims, schluter profiles, and fasteners near the floor should be specified in 316 (marine-grade) stainless.

Why 316, not 304

Grade 316 adds roughly 2% molybdenum to the alloy, which keeps the protective oxide film stable against chlorides and stops the pitting that destroys 304 in salt spray.
