What a Gauged Porcelain Panel Is
A gauged porcelain panel is porcelain manufactured to a deliberate, controlled thickness — that is what "gauged" means — and produced in large formats that range from oversized tiles to slabs covering several feet in a single piece. It is the same vitrified material as ordinary porcelain tile, pressed thinner and wider, so it reads as a continuous surface with very few grout joints.
The terminology matters because installers, manufacturers, and the FBC-adjacent trade standards all draw a line by size. The governing document is ANSI A137.3, the material specification for gauged porcelain.
- GPT — gauged porcelain tile
- A single unit with a facial area up to 1 m² (roughly 36 in. by 36 in. or smaller). Handled much like conventional tile, just thinner and larger.
- GPTP — gauged porcelain tile panel/slab
- A unit with a facial area of 1 m² or larger. These are the big sheets — common nominal sizes reach 48 in. by 96 in. or larger — and they require panel-specific handling, suction cups, and a frame to move without cracking.
Both are porcelain by composition, which is why the moisture conversation is short: under ASTM C373 the body absorbs ≤ 0.5% water, the same threshold that defines any porcelain. The interesting differences are mechanical and dimensional, and that is where the gauge decides everything.
The Thickness Classes That Decide Use
Thickness is not a style choice with gauged porcelain — it is a use class. ANSI A137.3 sorts gauged porcelain into thickness ranges, and each range is tied to where the product may legitimately be installed. Reading that class is the single most important step before anyone talks about color.
How A137.3 ties thickness to application
The standard publishes strength criteria by nominal thickness band. The thinnest products are restricted to vertical and countertop work; only the thicker bands are cleared for floors and the traffic that comes with them.

Why the thin band is walls only
A sub-5 mm panel does not have the body depth to resist a point load or a deflecting substrate without support across its whole back. On a wall it carries almost no live load; on a floor a single hard impact over a void can star-crack it. The standard codifies that physics by withholding the floor rating below 5 mm.
6mm vs 10mm, Head to Head
Once both gauges are floor-eligible, the choice between a ~6 mm panel and a ~10 mm standard tile turns on weight, break resistance, installation tolerance, and what is already on the floor. Neither is "better" outright; each wins a different Florida situation.
Weight and overlay
Thickness scales weight almost linearly. A 6 mm porcelain runs near three pounds per square foot, while a 10 mm tile runs near five — roughly a 40% lighter assembly. That lighter load is exactly why the thin panel is the tool of choice for going over an existing sound floor without overloading it or raising the surface much.
Break resistance and rigidity
More body depth resists bending and point impact. Breaking strength is measured under ASTM C648, and a 10 mm tile simply has more material between a dropped pan and a hairline crack. The thin panel closes that gap only when the mortar bed supports nearly its entire underside — support, not thickness, is doing the work.
Height and transitions
In a renovation, a 6 mm panel laid over old tile can keep finished floor height close to where it was, which protects door swings, cabinet toe-kicks, and thresholds. A 10 mm tile on fresh mortar over old tile can stack tall enough to need transition strips and door trimming.
Reading the stack height before you buy
Add the gauge to the mortar bed to estimate the new floor height over the old surface. A thin panel plus a thin-bed mortar can land close to flush at an existing threshold; a 10 mm tile on a full bed usually does not, so plan the transition detail before the material is ordered.
- Choose ~6 mm when overlaying a sound floor, chasing a seamless big-format look, or keeping height and weight down.
- Choose ~10 mm for a new floor, heavy or commercial-grade traffic, or any room where dropped impacts are routine.
- Either gauge delivers the same porcelain moisture performance, so humidity is not the tiebreaker.
The honest summary is that the thin panel buys you height and weight savings at the cost of a tighter, less forgiving installation, and the thicker gauge buys you margin for error at the cost of mass and stack height.
Can a Porcelain Panel Go on a Florida Floor
Yes — a panel can absolutely be a floor, provided its gauge is at least 5 mm and the substrate is prepared to panel tolerances. The question is never whether porcelain panels belong on floors, but whether the specific panel and the specific slab clear the requirements together.
The two-part gate
A floor panel install passes only when both halves are satisfied: the product carries a floor rating under A137.3, and the substrate meets the flatness and coverage demands of ANSI A108.19. Fail either and the floor telegraphs hollow spots, lippage, or cracks within a season.
Is this panel floor-ready in Florida?
- If the panel is under 5 mm — it is wall and countertop only; stop and reselect a floor gauge.
- If the slab is out of flat beyond 1/8 in. in 10 ft — it must be flattened with a patch or self-leveler before any panel goes down.
- If full mortar coverage cannot be achieved — switch to a thicker tile or correct the method; a thin panel over voids will crack.
- If all three pass — the panel is floor-ready; proceed to layout and the slab moisture check.

Slab Flatness and Mortar Coverage
Large, thin porcelain is unforgiving of a wavy slab. The bigger and thinner the piece, the more a high or low spot in the concrete shows up as lippage at the joint or as a void under the panel — and Florida slabs are poured to construction tolerances, not finish-floor tolerances.
The flatness number that changes for panels
Ordinary tile tolerates a slab flat to about 1/4 in. in 10 ft. Gauged panels do not. The TCNA requirement for gauged porcelain tightens that to 1/8 in. in 10 ft and 1/16 in. in 2 ft, measured from the high points. Hitting that on a typical Florida slab almost always means a skim of patch or a poured self-leveler first.
Why coverage is non-negotiable
Under a thin panel, the mortar is the structure. Voids are where panels break. The standard calls for 95% mortar coverage on wet and exterior installs and effectively near-full coverage under any large panel, achieved by troweling the substrate and back-buttering the panel — buttering the back of the piece as well — so the bed is continuous.

Are Thin Panels Good for High Traffic
A floor-rated ~6 mm panel performs well in high traffic when — and only when — it sits on a flat slab with near-full mortar support. The thinness is not the liability; an unsupported thin panel is. Properly bedded, porcelain is one of the hardest-wearing floor surfaces made.
Where thin panels earn their place
Open-plan living areas, kitchens, and retail-style spaces benefit from the panel's near-seamless look and easy cleaning. With few grout joints, there is less to stain and scrub — a real advantage in a sandy, humid Florida house where grit tracks in daily.
Where the thicker gauge is the safer call
Garages, workshops, entries that take rolling loads, and any floor exposed to repeated hard impacts favor the 10 mm body. The extra depth is cheap insurance against the one dropped tool that would chip a thinner edge.
- Slip resistance — specify a higher DCOF for wet Florida zones near pools, entries, and baths, regardless of gauge.
- Edge protection — thin panels are most vulnerable at exposed edges and outside corners; detail those with trim or a slightly thicker piece.
- Movement joints — large porcelain over a slab that bakes in afternoon sun needs honored expansion joints, because porcelain and concrete move at different rates.
